Pension triple lock divide as more than a third of under-35s would vote to scrap it

A partially collapsed wall in a military bedroom, sent in by anonymous armed forces personnel to the Kirslake Commission as it researched the state of military housing. Nearly a third of service personnel, 31 per cent, cite accommodation provision as a reason for wanting to leave the army,, which investigated military housing and produced a report in April this year, found that “a lot” of army houses are “sub-standard and suffer from a variety of problems”.

A former serviceperson said their daughter had developed asthma and laryngitis because of mould in their bathroom. The MoD said that “improving accommodation for those who serve is an absolute priority”, and in the last financial year, the department refurbished and improved around 10,500 homes. Mr Savill said that while it was difficult to say whether housing problems impacted recruitment, it was “definitely cropping up as an issue for staff retention”, building frustration among troops and families and “eroding the offer” from the military to their personnel.Mr Savill said that many of the problems arose from “diffused or confused” responsibility for repairs between contractors, the MoD’s infrastructure teams or the garricks themselves.
