Fire rages following an Israeli strike in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on 26 May 2024 The Israeli Prime Minister has described the killing of at least 45 people after Israeli airstrikes in the southern Gaza city of Rafah as a “tragic mistake”.

The assault came hours after Hamas fired a barrage of rockets from Gaza towards Tel Aviv for the first time in four months, for which its military arm, The missiles reportedly struck near aid warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the area, according to the Gaza media office.

A grab taken from footage filmed by one of the volunteers of the Palestine Red Crescent Society shows footage of fire after an Israeli strike hit the tents of displaced Palestinians northwest of Rafah late on Sunday Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant was in Rafah on Sunday and was briefed on the “deepening of operations” there, his office said.

The attacks on Israel, seven months into its offensive on Gaza, were the first long-range strikes from Gaza since January, according to Associated Press. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the attack.More than one million people have fled from Rafah since Israel began its offensive, according to AP.
