Facing continued, fierce opposition to its plans to put a low-income housing complex on Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas now will pivot and explore other options, the City Council decided late Wednesday night.
“Having more affordable housing is very, very important to me,” Blackwell said as she introduced her task force proposal. Ehlers, who is running against Kranz for the mayor’s spot and currently represents the city’s eastern regions, said the L-7 site was originally purchased with city park funds in the late 1990s and area residents ought to get a park, instead of housing.
On Wednesday before their late-night vote, council members heard from 30 public speakers. About 75 percent of them strongly opposed the housing plans for the site. The mayor said it was the best-attended meeting of the three that the council has held on the issue in the last several years.
