Here is what we know so far about Victoria's bushfires and their impact today, based on information from the Emergency Management Commissioner that was accurate as of 3.30pm.Eight bushfires are burning at emergency level across East Gippsland, and there are dozens of blazes raging across an area stretching from Victoria's southern coast to the NSW border. But a major fire front that threatened Mallacoota has passed the coastal town.

At least 43 structures have been destroyed in Sarsfield, north-east of Bairnsdale, and Buchan. The Clifton Creek Primary School, near Sarsfield, has been destroyed, and the Mallacoota P-12 College has been damaged. There have been reports of houses destroyed in Mallacoota and Club Terrace, north-east of Orbost, and Cudgewa, near Corryong.

The Princes Highway and Great Alpine Road are closed in both directions east of Bairnsdale. Dozens of local roads are either inaccessible or have been closed, and firefighters warn there is a risk burnt trees will fall across roads in coming days. The same warning has been issued to people in Brocket, Louisville, Mayford or Selwyn, where a bushfire is travelling north towards Hotham Heights.

“You can sort of see areas where it’s completely singed,” she said. “There will be just a house standing completely untouched surrounded by burnt grass, and then there’s other areas where homes are completely decimated. The CFA is now in Duncan Road clearing trees and putting out spot fires.
