A man has died defending a property in southern New South Wales and there are fears hundreds of properties have been obliterated by bushfires burning across the state.

The 47-year-old man had been defending a friend’s property in Batlow on Saturday night but vanished after leaving to retrieve water.

His friend later found him unconscious in a ute and drove to nearby police but the man died at the scene, believed to be from a heart attack. Four firefighters injured battling blazes across the state of Saturday have been released from hospital. Image: News Corp Australia
