French residents are preparing to feel the full effects of strict measures which are set to be introduced in order to combat the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country.

| The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has ordered the nation's citizens stay at home unless absolutely necessary.

Beginning midday Tuesday, residents should only leave their homes for essential duties. "We are in a situation of war, a health war," Mr Macron said. "The enemy is there, it's invisible and it's progressing". Mr Macron also confirmed the EU would shut its borders for 30 days. Image: Getty
