The six-month moratorium on evictions does not mean Australians can stop paying rent, Housing Minister Michael Sukkar says.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and state and territory leaders will meet on Friday to discuss minimum standards and rules around residential and commercial rents. Many renters are under pressure as the coronavirus forces businesses to shed staff."There is a moratorium on evictions but not a moratorium on the requirement to pay rents," Mr Sukkar told the ABC on Wednesday. Many renters are under pressure as the coronavirus forces businesses to shed staff.

Some states are looking at conditions under which evictions can still occur, such as when there is damage to the property or illegal conduct.Source

Lol with a backlog of around 250000 tribunal cases, what a joke noone will pay rent. My place can stay empty fullstop

Or what - you’ll evict me?

I wonder how many investment properties he has?

The moratorium does nothing but stall the issue for a short period. Renters will still be vulnerable the minute it’s lifted. I certainly don’t trust that all property owners will share the benefits they’ve been granted with their tenants. 1/1

This is so easy to interpret. If the government is paying you $1500 a fortnight, pay your rent and be a good citizen. Don’t be a fuckwit. The rule is in place for those who are struggling, not for people to be greedy

What about tenants whose leases come to an end before 6 months is up. Can they be evicted just because the lease ends even if they have been paying their rent.

Is this guy from underbelly crim

We are all in this together. It’s a time for level headed conversation and compromise.

If the landlord is having a freeze on mortgages then it should be passed onto the tenant. If not they don’t need to have a freeze on the mortgage

How about as part of the lockdown we justify why we don't need you as housing minister and use your salary to help someone who's homeless

Wake up Mr Sukkar.! How can you pay rent( residential &commercial) if you are not working or business has no customers who have no money. This Govt can solve this by FREEZEING ALL RENTS, MORTGAGES, LOANS. A wi win for all🇦🇺👎

Are Landlords are getting mortgage holidays?

And where exactly is the money gonna come from? Can’t work cos your industry is closed, can’t get JobKeeper bc you hadn’t been at your job 12 months, can’t get a loan bc you don’t have a job.. 🤔🤔🤔

ManchurianDevil So important that the ruling class continues to concentrate assets *uninterrupted.* More important than death and chaos, is the perpetuation of wealth’s prime directive: Growth. The religion of Capitalism: More.

Never give a Sukkar an even break

How does a business pay rent if they have been told to close and their income has gone to zero ?

Well, that’s the message a lot of tenants received and they’re doing it en masse.

Lol
