An Associated Press count shows more than 3,300 deaths nationwide have been linked to coronavirus outbreaks in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The latest count is up to at least 3,321 deaths, from about 450 just 10 days ago.

And those are just the outbreaks we know about. Most states provide only total numbers of nursing home deaths and don’t give details of specific outbreaks. Notable among them is the nation’s leader, New York, which accounts for 1,880 nursing home deaths out of about 96,000 total residents but has so far declined to detail specific outbreaks, citing privacy concerns.

Experts say nursing home deaths may keep climbing because of chronic staffing shortages that have been made worse by the coronavirus crisis, a shortage of protective supplies and a continued lack of available testing. And the deaths have skyrocketed despite steps taken by the federal government in mid-March to bar visitors, cease all group activities, and require that every worker be screened for fever or respiratory symptoms at every shift.earlier this month found that infections were continuing to find their way into nursing homes because such screenings didn’t catch people who were infected but asymptomatic.

Dr. Deborah Birx, who leads the White House coronavirus response, suggested this past week that as more COVID-19 tests become available, nursing homes should be a top priority. “We need to really ensure that nursing homes have sentinel surveillance. And what do I mean by that? That we’re actively testing in nursing homes, both the residents and the workers, at all times,” Birx said.

ABC reports that 25% of New York State’s death are from nursing homes and LTC facilities — but the death rate for those facilities is 46% in Massachusetts. Why MA so much higher?

What’s the solution for nursing homes? I can’t believe this hasn’t been a bigger story.

It's so sad. If my mother or another relative was in a home I would get them out now.

My sister in-law’s Mom was in a LI, NY nursing home. Six weeks ago my sister in-law was no longer allowed to visit (she was there at least 4X a week). Her Mom passed away last Friday & we discovered they didn’t have access to any COVID2019 tests & she never got to say goodbye.

Limit visiting to 1 family member even if it’s every two days! These people suffer normally now they short staffed and no family members it’s outrageous, this country could care less about people! Poison food poison water and suffering of elderly!

This already happened in Europe ( and still happening)... why dont other countries learn and do better in these nursing homes?

Governors who are sending patients to nursing homes are making this a bigger problem. No visitor allowed for family members but sure take in a covid patient that was released. NY is one that is forcing nursing home to take discharged patients and not allowing testing

look at these comments if you want to know why this country is doomed.

Wait for American neocon supremacists like andrewsweiss ianbremmer JRubinBlogger rushing to declare 'America has the best healthcare' when U.S. nursing homes are like Nazi concentration camps with similar mortality rate

similar news was reported in July 2019. 'A third person has died following an outbreak of respiratory illness at a Fairfax County assisted-living facility' The virus was already in US as early as July 2019. They just didnt know or hid it as secret .

Doubtful...

Calm down.

True, when you left behind your parents this is what happens. countries who don't have nursing home the death will be less,, Africa, Asia, and most of Muslims family don't put thier parents nursing home We look after them in our own homes. The West needs to learn COVID19

Sadly most nursing homes are dumps. Under staffed and ill equipped. Unfortunately most of the patients are neglected not only by the system but their families also. Now the media cares Where have they been

Almost like we should have been quarantining and focusing efforts on protecting the highest risk groups instead of blanket lockdowns

That’s a lot.

Because the federal government has not been releasing a count of its own, the AP has kept its own running tally based on media reports and state health departments. The latest count of at least 3,321 deaths is up from about 450 deaths just 10 days ago. :(

I just don’t know I can believe anything you say any more.

Elderly in facilities have pre-existing conditions that leave them more susceptible to catching these viruses and unable to fight back. Influenza leading to pneumonia is a frequent cause of death in these facilities.

Population control Wuhan style.

realDonaldTrump Mike_Pence FYI

This is where the attention should have been given. A SNF can be quickly overran with flu like illnesses.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Demon rats were killing them on purpose just to get their Covid numbers up to push the vaccine.

They are killing off the Old people 😢

The threat of the virus to those in nursing homes was something specifically mentioned in the Red Dawn emails posted by the NY Times.... so much unnecessary pain, anguish, and death could have been avoided....a real travesty that our administration did not act sooner.

How many b.w r in hospitals!?

Should the world send their medical bill for COVID19 to China?

Deaths soar at Britain's care homes as COVID-19 stalks elderlyThousands of care homes across Britain were locked down last month to stop COVID-19 from spreading among their frail and elderly residents. For Jamshad Ali, 87, it came anyway. Same as in Spain. Why are they leaving them in the facility, many could be moved if test negative, instead leaving vulnerable exposed! Families may need to bring home for a while until under control!! Not saying easy, but do you want to sit back and just watch thru the window? covid19 kag Friend works in a care home and they have lost several residents to suspected Covid19.
