Nearly half of Canada’s COVID-19 deaths have happened at long-term care homes. There have been staff walkouts at some facilities where pay is low

OTTAWA – With long-term care homes at the front lines of Canada’s battle against COVID-19, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is willing to help provinces increase worker pay to keep the battle lines well staffed.

These are not the only tragic examples, with other deadly outbreaks at homes in Toronto and Calgary, and in other cities and town across the country. “We recognize the terrible and tragic stories that have come out of seniors’ residences and long-term care facilities across this country, and our hearts go out to families who’ve lost loved ones in some terrible ways,” he said. “We need to make sure that our seniors who are most vulnerable are protected.”

“We’re in conversation with the provinces right now on moving forward on a model of increasing support for long-term care workers and other workers in essential industries,” he said.“We are willing to participate in sending money to the provinces to help and we’re having discussions with the provinces about what that is.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced plans Tuesday to ensure workers only went to one home. He said the order was made possible, because the pandemic had not hit hospitals as bad as once feared. We recognize the terrible and tragic stories that have come out of seniors' residences“This government has your back. We are using every tool available to us.”

Union workers are paid fairly.

For profit health care companies continue to line their own pockets, not their staff's pockets. Staff work without proper supplies all the time. I work in LTC. A couple of weekends ago we had no proper hand soap to use. We were told to use bodywash/shampoo until Monday.

Government created Canada’s healthcare crisis before this virus but now they are going to fix it?

AnnieClaireBO Liberals just “Heeding guidelines” say it all doesn’t it? Face the TRUTH re long term elderly care/old age residences, this neglect causing death by dehydration was happening long before COVID 19 due to a culture of protectionism in a failing underfunded medical system. I saw my uncle die of dehydration over many days due to neglect.

We, boomers, are aware of that, it is a anti-boomer conspiracy all along. (joke) Given that we know this, can the facilities be isolated and the rest allowed out, wear a mask, wash hands?
