The Real Estate Institute of Queensland is urging landlords to write to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, outlining their opposition to the State Government's proposed COVID-19 protections for tenants.

Ms Mercorella said the REIQ was advocating for the Queensland Government to also introduce a rental deferral scheme.

"The data and the facts definitely don't support that. The vast majority are mum and dad everyday investors — nurses, teachers, tradespeople — who own one property and they work really hard to own that property," she said. "We have not yet seen the bill itself, I understand it's currently being prepared, but there is still time to make some changes and to allow for more reasonableness and greater balance," Ms Mercorella said.

I think the real estate institute are just trying to feather their own nest. For tenants having the thought of having to pay back what could be a fair sized debt would add to their stress levels.

Real estate.

Where will all the renters go, if all the mum and dad investers pull out of the market? Good luck governments dealing with that.

'Greed is good'gordon gecko famous quote from movie 'wallstreet'. Greed kills, greed makes others suffer. Someone always loses, usually poor people.

Poor little rentiers.

Lol yeah because after the payment is deferred they’ll be able to start paying back the difference in 6 months 😂 evryones taking a hair cut, if the landlords don’t want to negotiate their tenants will leave and the only new ones they will get will be on rent reductions anyway.

The key players in all of this are keeping very quiet and are offering nothing. The banks could easily assist by using the free money from the ARB to provide an interest free loan holiday. Being the greedy sods they are - they will just stay silent.

The only residents who won’t suffer one way or another during this crisis are the bloody possums!

Does the Labour Party not understand there are thousands of young families who own rental properties and have lost their jobs or business as well.

OK, semi-retired person, who loses income, with ONE investment house, who has too much in assets for pension, STILL paying off house, NOW can have NO income, debt accumulating, and tenants living 'free' in house owner MUST continue to maintain?! COVID19 Australia THINK IT THRU

Get rid of negative gearing then.

If anyone has any objection to this, the first thing you should do is search how many investment properties they own in their portfolio. You’ll usually find it’s quite a few.

Ridiculous.... Watch some scumbag renters try capitolise this, they will still pay for drugs and sneakers but not rent....

Can't wait to hear LNPs Deb Frecklington's response to this. With an election coming up. Needing election funds.....
