Significant percentage of those polled had sought relief on mortgage or rent, but most were unsuccessful

Around half of Canadians have had their working life disrupted in some way because of the new coronavirus pandemic, including because they lost their job temporarily or permanently, a new poll from Forum Research Inc. suggests.

Getting 85 per cent of Canadians to agree on anything is “extremely rare,” said Dr. Lorne Bozinoff, president of Forum Research, but such a consensus seems understandable given the plunge in employment and economic activity due to the pandemic. Canada’s unemployment rate shot up 2.2 percentage points to 7.8 per cent last month, according to Statistics Canada, as more than one million jobs were lost in March.

Forum also asked respondents about their rent and mortgages, with more than half of the homeowners and around two-thirds of the renters reached by the polling firm saying that they had asked for assistance from their financial institution or landlord, such as by getting a mortgage or rent payment deferred.

Among renters, 14 per cent said they had missed a rent payment for similar reasons, with 80 per cent of those missing payments saying they would miss again. Thirteen per cent of those who said they did not miss a rent payment as of the poll date said they expected to miss next month’s. Banks are processing or have completed approximately 290,000 requests to defer credit card payments, and have allowed for approximately 670,000 Canadians to defer or skip mortgage payments as of April 16, the Canadian Bankers Association says. Banks have also said more than 90 per cent of mortgage deferral requests have been approved, according to the CBA, with the Big Six deferring payments on more than 10 per cent of their mortgages.

CanadianPM At a time where half (or more) Canadians have seen their employment status change, why persist in persecuting those on the bottom tier of financial aid. The Essence of Cerb is to provide FinancialAssistance during a pandemic. CERBWontHelpMe but it can.

Lost my part time restaurant job that helped pay the bills. Barely making it by now. Good thing I can't go anywhere to spend any money

Probably didn't need a poll to confirm this fact, but okay.
