Death of an Iraqi woman sparks unrest at a major refugee camp on a Greek Island, leaving widespread damage and many asylum seekers homeless

In this file photo a woman sits at the door of a tent in the Vial camp on the island of Chios which has only 1,000 places, but houses nearly 5,000 asylum seekers in unsanitary conditions and many camps situated in the nearby olive groove are without toilets, bathrooms, electricity and water. December 10, 2019.

The UN refugee agency's spokesman in Athens, Boris Cheshirkov, said the damage is still being evaluated but that many camp residents have likely been left homeless. "We managed to restore order at around 1 am... There were many people who took part in the incidents," another police source on Chios said.

As with all of Greece's island camps, Vial is massively overcrowded with more than 5,000 people living in space intended for around 1,000.
