Natalie and her family want to move out of a rental home. New laws means they can't

Laws rushed through by the Andrews government to protect renters have blocked tenants from moving out before their lease ends, unless they hand over their bond or go to the state planning tribunal to prove they are in “financial hardship”.The changes were made under a raft of laws pushed through by the government in April to deal with the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

The mother-of-two has been trying to get maintenance issues resolved since moving in nine months ago.“We want to assure tenants that the new laws are not intended to reduce their rights to exit their tenancies in any way,” she said.Natalie Smith has been trying to get maintenance done at her Mernda rental property since she moved in with her husband and two young children nine months ago.

"Due to COVID-19, I am under the impression that no one is to vacate unless they are suffering severe financial hardship," the real estate agent said in an email on Friday. "I think it's a basic right that we should be able to choose where we live, and that we don't have a choice in that is particularly stressful," Ms Smith said. She has been trying to get repairs to the ducted heating, which her two-year-old immuno-compromised son needs during the colder months. And the retaining wall in the backyard is still toppled over, meaning the two and three-year-old children have nowhere to play while they're stuck at home in lockdown.

How and Why Societal Elites Manipulate Public Fear

Why doesn't the landlord address the maintenance issues if that is the main concern and then Natalie and her family may not need to move out.

Landlords cannot give tenants a notice to vacate for any of the following reasons.. But sure, it’s the tenants that are being hard done by.

Half arsed journalism. She's been trying to get maintenance issues resolved ever since moving in. That in itself would be a breach by landlord & grounds to end a lease you would think? Further attacks on the Vic Premier seems to be underlying tone here lol.

State labor have really not introduced laws to fit in with families.........Its all about political gain and pain.

The problem is those that can meet their rental obligations are suddenly requesting rent reductions and this is caused by Dan Andrews. Rent relief should go to those that need it but these laws will only create more homeless when this is over.

Why should landlords not ask for the rent reductions to be paid back down the track.Banks are deferring loan repayments, but mortgage holders still have to pay the bank what they owe them at some stage, the bank doesn’t just take the hit for them, why is it different for landlords?

The article should be making more out of a landlord’s reluctance to meet their obligations. That’s the bigger issue.

Thanks for the write up and giving this issue more exposure. From reading various forums, agents are definitely invoking this legislation. It's just wrong and needs to be fixed quick smart. consumervic

Our government is just bad
