A bench and a slightly wobbly table used to be adequate for sitting and eating outside on warm days. Now the vogue is to turn your garden into a sophisticated outdoor living room, with rugs, cushions, scented candles and fire pits.

I think a lot of people are tired of making the best and the wartime spirit by now. We just want our freedom back to ignore the garden and go to the pub, cafe, shopping, football match, theatre, cinema or whatever makes us happy. I love my garden but I want the wide world back.
