Nearly 10,000 people have died from coronavirus in care homes in England and Wales, figures suggest.
In the week ending 8 May there were 1,666 deaths linked to coronavirus in care homes - down from just over 2,400 the week before.There were 12,600 deaths during the week - nearly a third of which were linked to coronavirus. Total deaths is seen as the best measure of the impact of the lockdown as it takes into account both deaths linked to coronavirus and other deaths that could be a result of the lockdown.
It means the total number of deaths seen this year is nearly 260,000 - 44,700 above what would be expected.The government has been receiving heavy criticism for the impact of coronavirus in care homes.Once you factor in Scotland, you would normally expect to see around 2,800 deaths a week.

In care homes 60% of people are aged over 85. UK life expectancy 82. It‘s sad their exit has been hastened but probably not by long and in many cases a relief. In the meantime we’ve f*ed the economy and next 10 years for our young people. Brilliant

ONS today report that for 17 days in a row more than 1,000 people died every single day from Coronavirus. Not sure UK government admitted to a single day where that figure was over 1,000. During those 17 days we were ‘managed’. Just like we are being managed now. Covid19UK

The UK Gov must be held accountable. It was their decision to clear NHS hospital wards putting infected covid-19 individuals into the Care Homes that ended up accounting for 40% of covid-19 deaths. Covid_19

If this is true, it feels like a cull of the vulnerable and most likely preventable. How accurate are these stats, are 10, 000 coroners reports stating death by coronavirus? I cant help but think in some instances neglect was a contributory factor
Better off long term
Many death certificates avoided using Covid19 and stated “viral pneumonia”, “ community acquired pneumonia” “respiratory faulted”, “pulmonary oedema” and other descriptions of the symptoms preceding death instead of the cause of death. Covid19 results were not available for some.
Perhaps this is a wake up call for all of us to realise that there is nothing more dear than family and we should do better than to send our elderly to care homes. Barring the most needy of this service and even then it can be said if we all stick together and help, everyone is
