After nearly 60 years of selling home décor and accessories, Pier 1 Imports Inc. is permanently closing its retail stores in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, though it hopes to sell its intellectual property and e-commerce business.

The Fort Worth, Texas, retailer on Tuesday sought bankruptcy-court approval to wind down its operations as soon as possible after its roughly 540 stores are able to reopen their doors and liquidate inventory.

Reporter: Pier 1 poorer, to uproot property. R.I.P.

Sad but incredibly ironic. Almost everything they sold was made in China. COVID19 victims

Thanks to news outlets like you

Will miss! Great store

I could tell, the US was not changing for years, it was getting older, people were poorer for the sake of Mike Bloombeg type of globalists....

One of my favorite stores. 😔

Trumps catastrophic failure in handling this pandemic has devastated the country, both in over 90,000 deaths and 40 million out of work to killing off businesses left and right.

We need to differentiate closings that occur b/c of the pandemic, and those that are just accelerated by it. Pier1 used to be what World Market is: fun, funky, unexpected... now, P1 furniture costs more than Wayfair but not better quality. And how many $50 pillows does one need?

Corocita1

They filed bankruptcy during financial crisis of 2008 also. Their business model is flawed. Every business makes money in the bull market, you don’t need a business or management degree for that. You are put to test during these crisis situation.

Hannity follows instructions from trump the worst person to ever be in office MAGA the only thing he has achieved is dividing the country like never before. The highest unemployment in living memory.

Democrats getting what they want

Thousands are will never return tobwork.

😔😔😔

Wow

It’s sad to see many legacy retailers struggling to sustain in their business! Change is the only constant in life! 🙏🏼

I thought they closed 15 years ago.

This is terrible - all of these giant chains taking their marbles and going home

The Wuhanvirus takes out another retail giant store. pier1

Wut?

They've been on the verge for years!

A shame . Another one bites the dust

Please send cranberry balsam candles 🕯

Sad

This has absolutely nothing to do with covid. They are another business that has been in dire straights for some time now.

😢

TarekFatah On a brighter note, the closure of Pier 1 Imports will hurt the Chinese the most. BoycottChineseProducts

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

but the stock is SOARING!!!!!!

I've spent a ton of $$ at their stores! I'm sad to see them go😞

TarekFatah Pig mouth 🙈🖕

Pier 1 was doomed when WalMart started sourcing everything overseas. Why go to Pier 1 when you can go to your local WalMart and fill your giant SUV with cheap, Chinese-made junk?

Who would’ve thought with those prices they’d be able to stay afloat...

where are the liquidation sales hosted? can i go and aCqUiRe sOme AsSets?

What’s gonna happen to all the candles?

You can finally get that wicker chair at 95% off for $400 now

Rip off store anyway. Good riddance

Finally some good news!

They had some nice stuff, some interesting stuff but it was way overpriced. This was going to happen in spite of COVID19. The virus just sped up the timeline by a few months, most likely.

Hate to see the loss of jobs but the entire store was peddling made in China junk created by essentially slave labor.

The nail in the coffin. Sad. I liked their stores.

Aka the basket store

ThankYouDonald

Don't blame it on the pandemic, started long ago

royalmusing They were still open?

I predict there'll be many more of these stories.

Thank a Democrat

I just browsed their sale/clearance products on their website and wow what a bunch of overpriced crap who exactly is their target demographic? the shrinking upper middle class? no wonder they're bankrupt.

another one falls

If we can save just one 90-year-old nursing home patient with a terminal illness it will all be worth it.

In the 'wake' of the pandemic, but not because of it. Pier 1 was becoming irrelevant long before January 2020.

They are so over priced it’s not funny. They should just try charging normal prices. I went in to look at sofa pillow. On sale $50 crazy.

30 years ago, fresh from a third world country, I walked in and I thought “Where have you been my whole life?”

I could never afford to shop there. Perhaps the pricing was over people's budgets.

Given most of its stuff was Chinese, I'm less sad. More dismayed about the hundreds of small businesses going under due to useless lockdowns that don't get WSJ press.

because of the CCPVirus

Wait, did Millennials kill it or are we off the hook for this one?

NainaGowda

They were going to close long before this pandemic.

Very sad, I love Pier 1 stores :(

basilnsage where's the bailout. just print!

Not surprised This company was in trouble before the Virus.

Hmmm they were having liquidation sales way before the pandemic. I guess they are blaming the virus for lackluster sales like many other retailers....

And, another one down. AnotherOneBitesTheDust

My wife right now

What!? I thought they went out of business 10 years ago.

That's sad...it is one of my favorite stores in NYC
