TOTAL LOCKDOWN: More than 3,000 residents unable to leave their homes as COVID cases in Victoria surgesVictorian Premier Daniel Andrews has taken the unprecedented step to lock down 3,000 residents in nine public housing estates in the suburbs of Flemington and North Melbourne for five days from Sunday. The extraordinary measures come as Victoria recorded 108 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest since March 28. The number of postcodes now under lockdown has risen to 12.
Approximately 500 police officers per shift will enforce the lockdown in what Mr Andrews called an "unprecedented" police response. Premier Andrews acknowledged the logistical difficulties providing food for over 3,000 people. "Can I just say to all Victorians these numbers are a very real concern to all of us. That’s why it is so, so important that if you have symptoms you come forward and get tested," he said.
