Yarra City Council will on Tuesday urge the government to test every resident of the 12 towers in its municipality, and transfer anyone who tests positive to an isolation hotel, rather than subject more towers to lockdown.

Tenants in high-rise towers outside the lockdown zones have called on the government to take urgent action to avoid another outbreak of COVID-19 at public housing estates in Richmond, Collingwood and Fitzroy.

Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, acknowledged on Sunday that some of the towers had been locked down on the "precautionary principle" that transmission may have occurred between the buildings. As Victoria recorded its highest yet daily tally of transmissions, with 127 new cases reported overnight, residents in other estates have expressed their alarm at cleaning rates and hygiene practices at other estates.

It is expected the motion, which also calls on the government to put an immediate rent freeze on apartments in the event of lockdown, and to introduce emergency free WiFi for residents in the towers, will be passed."I've been inundated, that's the only word for it," he said. "People are frightened, and they are right to be."

Ms Blake said cleaning was still ineffectual, even after the lockdown of the nine towers in Flemington and North Melbourne.

I wonder how many tenants names match up with leases with the housing commission. Could be a reason for people refusing to be tested?

That is a very smart idea, the scary part is. The health ministers and premier of Victoria don't think logically about these type of things. We all need to give them some smartness to get this done...

Isn’t this what they are doing as fast as they can?

Sounds like a responsible action from the Council. Should be able to get a pop up testing site at some of them.

Don’t always agree with Yarra Council, but this is a much better plan for our neighbours in Nth Richmond than the alternative. COVID19Vic vicpol

Like other tower monstrosities around Australia they all need bulldozing. In the 21st century we need far better low level integrated complexes within all suburbs. Australia is only multicultural in a general sense. In housing we have allowed the creation of culture ghettos.

Is it time to do public housing differently? What if all housing development and redevelopment sites included some public housing, we could provide safer low rise, low-density alternatives. Share the load, replace antiquated industrial towers

And how many will decline to be tested Boggles the mind that people are still refusing to take a simple test that will save lives and stop our economy from imploding when we are all subject to an metro wide lockdown!

Since most residents in a housing commission have relatives living in other housing commissions & they regularly visit 1 another, I wouldn’t be surprised if the virus has spread 2 other commission houses. It’s time 2 conduct testing on these residents 2 preempt further spreading.

melbourne is a middle class disaster springst

A hotel? What could go wrong...

Another hotel? I reckon it’s probably time to consider a Covid hospital or a field hospital for isolation.

The Housing Commission towers remain a lasting monument to Sir Henry Bolte.

I agree with this but make sure that there are people who can translate this in their language.

Resident inside Melbourne's lockdown towers goes without food for 24 hoursResidents of the public housing towers claim they were given little warning of the lock down, leaving them no time to gather groceries. 9News It’s unfair the lockdown was imposed without giving people enough notice to leave and avoid the lockdown. What about the poor elderly in nursing homes that have been in lockdown Umm I may have wuhan virus. But if you don't mind I might just quickly go down to the shops and by some groceries 1st. Maybe that answers the question why it was done the way it was.
