The Trump administration is resisting calls — even from political allies — to withdraw a proposal to make it more difficult to bring discrimination claims under the Fair Housing Act, even as the nation reckons with racial unrest

Now, as companies and organizations across the country rush to publicly show their dedication to racial equality in the aftermath of protests over George Floyd’s death at the hands of police, the calls to withdraw the contentious proposal are coming from closer to home.

The powerful National Association of Realtors — second only to the Chamber of Commerce in its lobbying expenditures — urged HUD to retract the proposed rule, pointing to a “broad consensus across the country that now is not the time to issue a regulation that could hinder further progress on addressing ongoing systemic racism in our country.”

HUD has maintained — and reiterated Tuesday — that the proposal merely brings the agency’s interpretation of the disparate impact standard in line with a 2015 Supreme Court ruling. “Although the Supreme Court decision did not address HUD’s rules directly, the Court went out of its way to urge caution in applying disparate impact theory in a manner that might undermine the very mission of both fair housing and helping to develop communities that suffer from lack of investment,” Montgomery wrote Tuesday.

The high court held that disparate impact claims can be brought under the Fair Housing Act but said “disparate impact liability must be limited so employers and other regulated entities are able to make the practical business choices and profit-related decisions that sustain a vibrant and dynamic free-enterprise system.”

Why you crying? Obama pushed his ACA tax penalty BS, tit for tat

Everybody knows nothing brings people together more than a good racial discrimination suit. You go politco I can feel you bringing people together.

Let's not forget in 1973 the US Department of Justice sued the Trump Management Corporation for violating the Fair Housing Act. Trump had refused to rent to Black tenants and lied to Black applicants about whether apartments were available, for starters.

This is maddening... all of this happening in the “dark of night” these are the things quietly changing the fabric of America. The outright abandonment of regulations designed to hold parties accountable.... all of the EPA regulations... it’s really quite stunning.

After education, we really need to fix out broken legal system. Way too many lawsuits and lawyers with incentive to drag out time and billing costs.

Trump defends Fair Housing Act- If your skin isn't 'fair,' get lost.. - While US reckons w/racial equality, Trump resists calls- even from political allies- to withdraw a proposal making it more difficult to claim discrimination under the Fair Housing Act

He’s got lots of practice in these racial discrimination practices!

I am on my hands and knees, begging for mercy from President Trump. Mr. Trump, I apologize for the disrespectful tone. I will happily and readily vote for you in November. God Bless Donald Trump, President of the United States!

The Department of housing and urban development looks mighty depressing.

No one should be surprised by this since Trump has been promulgating housing racial discrimination since the 1970s.

No he’s not. Fake news

If I find it troublesome, call the Crusades and kick them off! The ultimate scrap creature.

The government is full of scraps, and 2020 marks the beginning of the most important year in human history. The battle between the devil, Shinzo Abe, and I is still going on, but the devil has no win. If you're a Japanese, stop at bad spirits and fall to Buddhist Gate!
