Spiro Dimitriou's father John died alone in hospital on Monday morning. He now wants to ensure the death of his father, who caught COVID-19 at St Basil's Homes for the Aged, was not in vain

The last time Spiro Dimitriou saw his father, he played him some of his favourite Greek songs and watched his Dad's eyes light up.

John Dimitriou had dementia and was in a high-care unit within the facility. Spiro Dimitriou was told on July 20 that his father had contracted COVID-19. The federal government took over the facility several days later.Justin McManus Worksafe confirmed on the weekend it has started preliminary inquiries into at least 10 aged care homes in Victoria, including St Basil's.

"It was nightmarish from the start. From St Basil's management to the federal government takeover. You would not think this is how it should be. Left in those conditions, the fact they were so lonely was quite disturbing.

I'm sorry for the loss - but the flu season is here and Covi-19 is part of the new wave. In 2017 more than 100 people died and this is just the start. Covid is here to stay and we can't keep on hiding.
