Neighbours complain of increased drug use, disorder since former Howard Johnson Hotel became home to many tent city dwellers evicted from Vancouver's Oppenheimer Park

Twitter feeds have some valid concerns about the state of their neighbourhood. Condominium residents, some from the safety of their balconies, have photographed piles of garbage, clusters of discarded needles and tents and pop-up bike chop shops processing stolen bikes in the nooks, crannies, and alleyways near the Luugat.

There are many reasons for the increased street disorder in the Granville Street neighbourhood; most related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Services such as libraries, drop-in centres, washrooms and the nearby Gathering Place Community Centre, which offers vulnerable people showers, meals, and space to store belongings during the day, were closed for months and have only recently started to reopen at reduced service levels.

Ms. Abbott says there was such a rush to house Oppenheimer Park evacuees there was no time for advance consultation with the condominium owners, conversations that might have helped smooth the transition. The communication lines are open now, and some strata councils are working with Atira to keep the neighbourhood and alleyways clean and safe. Ms.

Fire AdrienneTanner sloppy journalist with no real facts. 14,000 residents have signed the petition with SaferVancouver Not a shadowy group at all - we’re families, children, seniors, couples, women & men that contribute to society - not drain it.

🤣🤣🤣 'the non-profit housing agency providing supports for residents at the Luugat, also cleans up messes around the buildings as they arise'.

Another PovertyPimp trying to shame people who actually work, contribute and move this city forward. AdrienneTanner come down and see the misery? Complete Gongshow. Or better yet take some members of HoboNation into your neighborhood

Not a fair fight.

1/Many of the activists and patchwork of 'non-profits' promoting the status quo or often absurd demands for free services often greatly benefit from the broken system that has created the DTES. It is a horrendous failure of multiple levels of gov't and must be taken apart and...

Activists ignore the fact that the neighbourhood around the Howard Johnson is predominantly middle working class, incl many families. These residents work hard to pay not only their own mortgages and bills, but the taxes that fund all of the gov't provided housing and programs.

Poor excuse for journalism, clearly an opinion piece and one that is not researched whatsoever. Crime (assaults/theft/property damage), used needles, open drug use, loads of garbage, aggressive behaviour, and disturbances have skyrocketed since the BC govt bought these hotels.

The Yonge-Parliament//Gerrard-Queen citizens are pleased to welcome the co-citizens of Yonge-Mt Pleasant/Eglinton in civic sharing. We have the highest rate of shelters and are at capacity....so do your part.

This article is very unfortune. It was written with a rushed judgment on people expressing their valid concerns on HEALTH and SAFETY of the community for EVERYONE and not just a few. I hope the author is willing to take the time to understand the source of frustration by many

Let convert downtown Vancouver into a shit hole. Homeless people are privileged to live in downtown.

Blame the parks board they allowed camping in the parks overnight Everybody knew it wasn’t gonna be in force and it was just gonna be a free-for-all. How’s the washroom situation? If this is the way were going we should set up townships placed on the outskirts of town

People with housing against homeless people. You’re not the victims here, heartless a-holes. Here’s an idea- sell and move!

The sense of entitlement of the 'tent city people' who have never paid their own way or work is reflected in how they treat their rooms, their neighbors and the neighborhood.

Yeah those condo owners need all the help they can get in their brave and noble battle to shit on humanity

'About 89% of Canada's land area (8,886,356 km2) is Crown land: 41% is federal crown land and 48% is provincial crown land.'

I bet you could clean up and prepare 25% of those homeless to work for farmers who can’t find workers in Quebec. They could make up to 40K a year. It just takes one person in government or media to care.

Poverty pimp writer says what?

Is the writer a journalist or an activist? There were some pretty strong opinions in that article

People don’t want real solutions, real solutions are hard, not pretty but the only way to fix this. Gather homeless up. Confine them. Feed, clothe, house them. Get them off the drugs, educate them. Then jobs and return to society.

No one has a right to live in downtown Vancouver.

Suggesting that everything is overblown because there have been no “violent” incidents is a ridiculous attempt to dismiss their concerns. If Adrienne Tanner’s idea of living in harmony with your neighbours is having the keypad for entry to your home smeared with human feces...wow

You don't get to be homeless in Canada today without screwing up a whole lot. This isn't a housing problem.

What a mess. Can't wait for winter weather to clear out the riff raff.

Those condo owners are rich. Let’s create a special Granville tax that goes to cleaning up the neighbourhood. If they don’t want to pay the tax they can volunteer for 10 hours doing the cleanup.

Tends to happen when you just dump people wherever it’s convenient in order to appease so called “advocates” that didn’t really give a damn about getting people off the street to being in with
