Finalists in design contest plan communal gardens to boost social integration on estates

Could it be farewell to the traditional back garden? Architects shortlisted by the government to design prototype housing in England have called time on fenced-off sanctuaries and want to replace them with communal gardens to boost social integration.

Sounds like shoehorning more housing in less space. Communal parks are where people can meet, before the massive council cutbacks made them unsafe and unkempt.

good thinking, but can´t we have a small fence in case we a nice summer day like to have sex on the lawn

Nope! We’ve gone from postage stamp gardens in new builds to zero private garden under the guise of a community concept. Humans are sociable by nature but also need space and privacy. This would result in reduced use of outdoor spaces, not more 🤔

Passed a new estate recently where it looked like the fence panels had more square footage than the lawns. High fences on small gardens are an awful idea. Keeping them below 5ft is much more pleasant.

Are these the same architects that built all that high rise crap in London over the last few decades?

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no..................stupid stupid idea.

Well how will you keep you dog safe then?

No chance because there’s always that one neighbour who has their garden like a jungle.

Look at how they do things in Singapore before you start.

More hair brained ideas from groupthink architects

Do these architects not know some people have pets and a private garden is a necessity not a luxury?

make them live there when they've finished

north_joanna Could one of the architects living in such a set-up (I assume there is at least one) tell me how he/she/they find it?

Neurotypical extroverts making the mistake of thinking everyone else functions the way they do...

What an absolutely ridiculous idea. Just like the high rise living that was foisted on us by these idiots in the past

A private green space to shape as you please and enjoy should be part of every new development. Instead I see shoe boxes thrown up in five minutes using plywood, insulation and sticky tape with no gardens at all. New build slums and hovels - no thanks

I really doubt the architects will be living in them. They will have a fenced off space in the Cotswold.

Why is there this sudden obsession that we all have to 'get involved in the local community?' A bit of privacy goes a long way (to me at least).

Perhaps some of the community gardens could open 4 (physically distanced) tours? 'Seeing is believing'. TabardGrowers SFarms_Gardens CalthorpeCG growingforgold HCGAGardens & so many more. communitygardens Private outdoor space crucial too.

Hi , or cause more friction ?

Fantasy. This is not what people want.

Communal gardens and Covid - will that work?

Crap idea and already been proved a bad approach in the 50,60 and 70s ...social spaces became no go areas with bullying , rubbish, no privacy at all for tenants, no care from cash strapped councils...this should be stamped out now !

A lot easier to conduct surveillance on communal gardens. libertyhq netpol

Erm...no. My garden is a safe place for my children and dog to play. Not many would want an open space with no privacy.

I wonder which mug will end up looking after it?

No thanks, privacy all the way

No!!

'Good fences make good neighbors.' --Robert Frost, 'Mending Wall' (1914)

Have they learned nothing from the open plan gardens of the past?People hate open plan.Horrible kids or horrible adults take over the spaces and wreck them or dump rubbish.Good fences make good neighbours.Communal spaces need people in charge to maintain them and keep them open.

I'll bet they're architects with a place in the country.

Remember collective farming.

This is nothing new. Intentional communities are all over the world. Come along now chaps, keep up 😅

I bet the architects will not be living in these houses.

Make an appointment in an app to use the garden is a wonderful idea. Consider we don’t need so many bedrooms either. We could hot-bunk, and when one neighbour gets out of bed, the person from next door could just get in And how about shared clothing? Olive green boiler suits?

all ready been try and failed, look at all the 50 and 60 housing, lots of green space, nobody on them.

Definitely not. You don't choose your neighbours.

Dogs and children roaming everywhere recipe for disaster

Architects can design what they like. Residents will erect fences for privacy

Absolute horse shit. So,I can take my family and my dog and my paddling pool and my bbq and bowl up at an architects garden for the afternoon. What they really want is smaller plots so that they can cram more houses in. Idiots.

No thank you!!

Somehow I don’t think this is gonna work.. especially booking a private slot in a communal garden using an app..not for me thank you.

Great idea in Utopia. Shit idea in real life. 😉

That would also create corridors for our depleted wildlife.

Ridiculous idea! I now live in USA and first thing neighbours do is to erect fences. Go design something useful, Pfft!

Why is the street painted with rainbow colours?

Good luck with that! My garden is my sanctuary where I go to get away from people!! I wouldn’t touch this with a one mile long barge pole!!

Prefer my kids to play safely thanks

Nearly every architect I've met has been a massive Communist so communal gardens are right up their alley.

Is this a compromise for the 'no borders' cranks?

They have no dogs?

No privacy in other words !!

Need a back garden so you have somewhere where there isn't dog mess randomly scattered over it, so your kids can play freely, tbh.

What he did this time?

would help, if people can get over their differences and not mess with it.
