ANALYSIS: Aged care is in the midst of a crisis, but it feels all too familiar

With aged care staff too frightened to speak out — and many either infected themselves or run off their feet — information is left to be shared by a few distraught family members who stand outside the gates of aged care facilities and relay their heartache to the media. That's how the horror stories have been revealed.

Despite this, Morrison and Colbeck spent yesterday's Question Time arguing that the many plans, emails, guidelines and webinars which were sent to the aged care sector equated to effective preparation and that high levels of community transmission were to blame. There are now 126 nursing homes affected by coronavirus in Australia.

It's important to understand why it took a pandemic to ignite a parliamentary debate about aged care. The last time that happened was when it was revealed staff were using "kerosene baths" to rid residents of scabies. That barbaric practiceIt's spread by a lack of bathing and carried on the hands of understaffed, undertrained aged care workers. It's due to a lack of infection control and can sweep through nursing homes rapidly.

Guess we will just have to privatise the ABC to secure funds for aged care.
