Nursing homes that fail to test residents and staff for coronavirus could face fines under new measures announced by the Trump administration, part of what officials call a “dramatic ramp up in our efforts” to address the toll the virus is taking.

A group of researchers at the University of North Carolina found the cells that line the nose may be more likely to become infected with the virus than the throat or lungs.

While the agency has been recommending widespread testing for months, this is the first time nursing homes could see financial consequences for failing to test residents or staff if there are hints of an outbreak, like symptoms of COVID-19 among residents or staff. Verma said the cost of widespread testing has proven to be a barrier for some nursing homes, so federal agencies have tried to address that concern by providing point-of-care testing kits to 15,000 nursing homes around the country and more than $5 billion in broad financial support from a series of rescue packages passed by Congress. The agency is calling on nursing homes to conduct widespread testing of residents and staff if any resident has shown symptoms or tested positive for the virus.

Social distancing reminders are seen near a table during a visit at a nursing home in Kirkland, Wash., Aug. 24, 2020. Those new training measures come on the heels of studies that show that among the key defenders against the coronavirus are nursing home staffs themselves.by The Journal of the American Medical Association , found that across eight states those facilities that were able to maintain more, qualified staffing in the homes had fewer COVID-19 cases than staffing in homes the study rated as low-performing.

Where were you back in February!

Dramatic ramp up after 8 months of inaction....right before election.....in complete opposition of his “slow down the testing” policy?

Give me a break. Now that we are 70 days from an election and after yelling “I TOLD MY PEOPLE, SLOW THE TESTING DOWN” he’s going to pull this out of his ___?!

realDonaldTrump Maybe you shouldn't wiped out regulations on Nursing homes in 2017.

Politics Trump rolled back regulations on nursing homes...

Too little, too late! Punishment for the wrong people! It is Trump and his administration who should be punished for doing nothing to stop the spread of Coronavirus and the deaths! Their incompetence and lack of Federal response is the reason for deaths☠️☠️

We can’t just shovel infected people back in them?

tRump relentlessly seeks to divide Americans against each other during a moment of national crisis reflects badly not only on him, but also on the Republicans in the U.S. Congress who continue to enable his abuses. On Nov. 3, American voters can choose to drain the swamp.

Oh, okay? Now they care?

Good!! Start in NY , NJ and CA

When is it going to go away like magic?
