A vulnerable koala colony under threat from housing development in Sydney's south-west has been thrown a lifeline, with the NSW Government unveiling what they say is a "once in a generation commitment".

But the opposition has slammed the proposal, saying key recommendations handed down in a parliamentary inquiry have been ignored. The colony was at risk from the government's plan to build 40,000 homes in the Macarthur region during the next two decades. The $84 million rescue plan announced today included a new koala reserve in the Georges River region, 120km of fencing, and the planting of 100,000 trees. But Shadow Environment Minister Kate Washington criticised the plan. However, critics claim key recommendations have been ignored.
