Puerto Rican architect Carla Gautier Castro founded Konti Design Built Studio, a San Juan firm dedicated to transforming shipping containers into hurricane and earthquake-proof housing.

Puerto Rican architect Carla Gautier Castro stands overlooking the remains of a home after a string of earthquakes hammered the town of Yauco, on the southwest of the island.

It's a painful scene she has seen again and again. It is also the reason she now dedicates her life to ensuring everyone on the island has a safe dwelling. The pillars of this concrete house collapsed, crushing three vehicles underneath. Furniture and personal belongings are strewn around, unreachable, unsalvageable. "I'm traumatized," homeowner Luz María Morales Vargas tells Gautier Castro."We've lived here for 27 years.

I would be more interested if you can make a boat out of one

And she can use the billions in additional aid that your President and mine, Donald J Trump, just directed to Puerto Rico!!!

CNN hilarious so sad . Cry babies. Make sure sleepy joe has a drugs test before any main debate Make sure ears checked for an ear peace . Let’s see how it goes it will be a show and half Trump 4 more years All lives matter

What does the inside look like? I'm not convinced of this at all mother nature can destroy anything in its pathway regardless.

She the PR is doing good things with out us let them be there own territory

Hurricane proof is a bit subjective...depends on location, severity, water levels, what kind of debris is flying through the air.

shipping containers are structurally inferior to modern homes and have to be in reinforced. It cost as much if not more to make them safe. They're great for storing equipment but not for living in.

Nahhhh

Interesting

Good!

Love this story!!! We need this today! ❤️❤️

The dumbass president couldn't help so now they had to do it themselves.

Thats been a thing for 35 years and now CNN gonna act like this is a newly discovered thing... smfh,

That's really genius. Just be careful. Humpty Trumpty might see this & send ICE to gather folks up. He doesn't know Puerto Rico's part of the U.S.🙄

We need to build freaking up. Not little short ground cover type structures. Also, pretty sure concrete is a much better, cheaper and more environmentally friendly way to provide housing to people

Not awesome. Article claims the problem is housing is expensive and low median income. However, the Architect forgets to explain that for $100K you can buy a 3/2 1300 sq/ft house with at least 300 sq/m land or buy her $40k 2/1 320 sq/ft home with no land. Sq/Ft is way more $$$.

Im sorry. Did they say architect?

I had a similar idea but also feel making them into transportable surgeries and then placing them in strategic spots around the globe where they could be picked up in times of emergencies would be beneficial. Copters could pick them up and place them in needed areas.

If your government won’t do it God helps those who build their own houses. Okay I made it up but a clever compassionate girl. ❤️

You better hope Trump or Carson don't see this. They'll have all the poor living in them...away from the white suburbs OBVS.

Let's get this DONE 👏👏👏👏

que buena!!!

wow nice

Not a bad idea
