As residents in Victoria's south-west deal with flooded homes, Melbourne is poised to pass the annual rainfall average - the earliest it's done it in 24 years.

As residents in Victoria's south-west deal with flooded homes, Melbourne is poised to pass the annual rainfall average – the earliest it's done it in 24 years.

An SES spokeswoman said Country Fire Authority crews had helped to sandbag homes and pump water at Allansford. "In wet and windy weather there's risk of falling trees and it’s really important to never drive on flooded roads because it’s really dangerous." A severe weather warning for large rainfall and damaging winds remains in place for large swaths of Victoria on Thursday.

Regional cities inside the warning area include Warrnambool, Shepparton, Seymour, Ballarat, Geelong and Wangaratta. The strongest wind gusts clocked were 111 km/h at Mount Hotham, 94km/h at Falls Creek, and 91km/h at Wilsons Prom.
