Buying a house is off-limits to many thanks to rising rents, pay freezes and a lack of affordable homes. But it hasn’t always been this way. What went wrong?

You don't mention issues schemes such as SharedOwnership or escalating service charges which are making leasehold flats unaffordable on their own Why do The Guardian not write more about problems with SharedOwnership ? Finding it strange and think I might cancel subscription

Not to mention huge increases in rent particularly in the south. I’ve seen studios/bedsits for £1,000 a month.

It's still too easy for landlords to exploit shared ownership. Joseph Rowntree should look at its own bad practice; residents trying to sell their homes are charged huge sums to extend leaseholds with Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust.Could push a lot of residents under post-pandemic

Houses being seen as 'investments' rather than places to live?

Get rid of 5m immigrants, restrict purchases to UK nationals (and not companies) and penalise second home owners in crisis areas. Sorted.

Interesting. Though no mention of programmes designed to offer nominally 'affordable homes'... Will future articles in this mini series on the UK housing crisis touch on SharedOwnership? hilaryosborne lydia_rachel_ pixelsquid PorcelinaD

A house is a shelter which is a basic need for humans since we left the bats in the caves. Now we cant afford a shelter and the bats are mad we left and causing viruses to spread. Cavemen had the best times.

TL:DR The tories started it selling off council housing and effectively barring council's from replacing the stock, then New Labour oversaw the biggest post war bubble of house price inflation that they artificially kept inflating with quantitative easing. Saved you a click.

Let me guess you guys have a problem with the Chinese laundering dirty money into your housing market too? West Coast of NA is experiencing this and our housing prices are insane!

People born into this world need to be fed and housed for free. The resources utilised belong to the Commons. Plenty of jobs to be created in producing sustainable food and building sustainable homes. Communities. This assumes we want to live in a civilised world.

So, given the presented stats of population, when will a smaller population be incentivised? Or maybe tearing up more green fields, destroying natural resources, etc, etc, is the favoured plan being inferred?

Erm, actually, owning a home is affordable, much more so than renting. It's meeting the lender's conditions to allow you to become an owner that is unattainable. Place the blame where it belongs.

The same scenario is slowly playing out in America as well.

You haven't given enough weight to the 1991 reforms of the planning system
