The first scheme under the Affordable Housing Bill is expected to see 50 homes completed in Co Cork this year. The legislation will require 10% of social homes and 10% of affordable homes in housing developments in every local authority area.
He said that 33,000 homes a year need to be delivered, but the shut down of the construction industry this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic could result in completions of between 12,000 to 14,000. Mr O'Brien said the criteria for a national scheme is in in the bill and eight other schemes have been announced and are to be tenanted this year.
The minister said the scheme has been calibrated to focus on those who really need it and would deliver approximately 2,000 units a year over a three-to-four-year period and that similar initiatives in other jurisdictions have been examined and improved on.The housing proposals have been criticised by the opposition who are angry that the minister is proceeding before the early scrutiny of his legislation was finished.
He said the Government has introduced a bill to provide for a specific percentage of land in private development to be limited to purchase by first-time buyers only.
1500 affordable homes for 4 years not exactly a huge news story.
We heard that many many many many times before folks
FF FG have a terrible track record on housing. As a FG voter I feel it is about time they get this right. They can't have many more chances.
6000 in 4 years. There's 250,000 people in Ireland looking to buy a house
Back to back articles on my Twitter feed 🙄🙄
In the next 4 years.... while large investment companies are currently snapping up whole new build estates to put on the rental market.. my heart honestly breaks for young people today just trying to make a start in life!
Ireland requires 30K homes per year,so 4 years that's 120K homes. What the minister is actually saying that the govt will provide 5% of the houses that we need as affordable. No doubt the amount of houses that will be built will be well short of 120k the crisis will still be here
Wonder how many will go to foreign investment firms x
Affordable yeah
