As fires in Northern California threaten homes, crews in Oregon have been making progress against the nation’s largest wildfire. The Bootleg Fire is 40% surrounded after burning some 70 homes.

A sign damaged by the Bootleg Fire stands among the haze on Thursday, July 22, 2021, near Paisley, Ore.

Jacobsen declined to release the extent of the firefighters’ injuries but said they were still being evaluated and treated Friday. The firefighters included three U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service crew members from North Dakota and two USDA Forest Service firefighters from New Mexico. The fire, which was ignited by lightning, had been expanding by up to 4 miles a day, pushed by strong winds and critically dry weather.

The Tamarack Fire south of Lake Tahoe has now burned more than 92 square miles of timber and head-high chaparral of mostly national forest land, fire officials said Friday.
