Shivering through lockdown? Australia might be a sunburned country, but in winter, the cold reality bites: Our homes are not built to withstand the chill ...

She’s not the only one who is shivering through lockdown. At its peak, searches for space heaters increased by 44 per cent in June 2021 compared to the average for the last four winters. As more of us are spending time inside it begs the question: Why are our houses so cold?

While new homes are comparatively better, Dr Trivess Moore, senior lecturer at RMIT University’s School of Property, Construction and Project Management says the standard is low. “The majority of new houses in Australia are only built to meet the minimum building code requirements which are not sufficient to deliver year round thermal comfort, especially with a changing climate,” he says.

aussiewongm It comes from the underlying problem in Australian society of profit at all costs. All new properties should have double-glazed windows, but would that happen ? No it wouldn't. The profit margin of the builder would go down. Australian houses are glorified tents.

won’t be a problem much longer

Try living in a rental. You have no control over poor insulation, poorly sealed doors and windows or ineffective heating.

Perhaps we need a pink batts program. Any takers?

Nice and cosy where we live with our fire place 🤷‍♀️

Really? It's July and we are already seeing temperatures back in 20s. What cold ?

😞Each night I think about people who are struggling...there are so many. It could happen to anyone. Sleeping bags are helpful to get warm, maybe someone can design some overalls made using the same materials? Who's going to see you in lockdown? 🤔

Then why are house prices so high 😂

coming from germany i was shocked how cold the homes are in melbourne in the winter. terrible heating concepts and bad insulation in general. heating with electricity is common.

Not built to stay cool in summer either. Unless you live in the bush with a circumference veranda. slownewsday doomandgloom 🥱🥱

Because people pretend that Australia is a hot country where everyone belongs to a surf club.
