When asked who specifically is building the houses, Minister O'Brien replied “builders” HousingForAll

THE GOVERNMENT’S HOUSING for All plan launched yesterday aims to create 300,000 new homes by the end of the decade, with more than half to come from the private sector.

On average, over 33,000 homes will be built each year, rising to 40,000 by 2030, according to the plan. However, looking at next year the levels are significantly lower than that – a total of 24,600 new homes. The ESRI also told the Department of Housing in December that Ireland may need to build as many as 33,000 new homes a year to meet demand.

O’Brien added that the State is “the biggest builder in this country and, through the Land Development Agency, is going to build now on State-owned land”.Despite the setbacks posed by Covid-19, however, house-building activity recovered strongly from the impact of the pandemic after sites were reopened in May, according to the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland .

Work on a total of 12,700 housing units commenced in the three months to the end of June, the most in a single quarter since 2007. “The recovery of the residential construction sector continued with the removal of pandemic-related restrictions on activity in the sector from May 2021. #Open journalism No news is bad news Support The Journal Your contributions will help us continue to deliver the stories that are important to youIn the short-term, it plans to expand the Local Authority Home Loan scheme by the end of the year so that single people who have a gross income of up to €65,000 in the Greater Dublin Area, Cork and Galway will be eligible for the loan, with a reduced interest rate.

Increase in prices. Every ‘attempt’ at improving housing by FFGG is purely for optics and has consistently bumped up the price of a house. Fuck this government

So to move the country's interest away from Merriongate and other scams, they wheel out a Minister who thinks houses are built by 'Builders' just by asking. So 250,000 will appear overnight by magic all taken care of by 'the builders' I'm telling you Ted we are all screwed.

Zero most people can't even get an extension done now due to lack of tradesmen 🤣🤣

China built 8 covid hospitals in 10 days. If it was me, I’d fly in 1000 workers from cheap labour countries, have them build 10,000 houses in 3 months and put them in hotels. Fix those house prices at a cheap cost were means tested people can only buy 1 house each!

Is the intention to reduce house prices, land prices and rents or simply to plug affordability gaps through state intervention to sustain current price levels? DarraghOBrienTD If the former, by how much would govt like to see prices fall by 2030?

I think most people know that this is just a rehash of what has been failing for the past 5years. They just don't want to tackle vacant properties and land hoarding. This is what happens when public representatives are all from the landlord class who've an interest in high prices

Sweet fcuk all

Unless the government radically address the causes of overinflated house prices/rents nothing will change. The main one is the hoarding of land and property by individuals and corporations.

Any changes we see are likely only to benefit either politicians/politicians cronies or those invested in the housing market. As always with FFFG, the rest of us will see no positive changes whatsoever.

Increased house prices and rents as house supply falls further behind housing demand year on year

Very droll. Didn't think it was pastry chefs.

If it was for the birds ,they'd have cycle paths and all going in .

Apparently among the builders are Bob the backhander and Val the Vulture .

Just about sums up the Government’s thinking on this subject. Basically - numbers.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👀👀👀😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Borrow borrow borrow..spend spend spend.the bank bailout is a debt that children owe who are not born yet and all these morons can do is make it worse. Housing bridges roads and everything else they borrow they end up gifting to the boys in way of vulture funds tolls

BTriagain

Knightsatire “We’re announcing an announcement!”

Oh sweet Jesus 🤦‍♂️. The man doesn't believe in his own policy. The rehashed one also. He's getting hammered all over the twitter machine. 😂😂😂

Alan45075546 Well d’uh, what a stupid question?! 🤦‍♂️

Hes a spoofer. End of.

Stupid question to ask really - we don’t want to start hiring civil servant council workers again - there has to be incentive to make a profit and build them ASAP - council workers will cost the state more money than contracting to private companies

Not good enough, How do we trigger an election?

Numpty

No wonder he refused to debate anyone 🙄

Very fucking little will change, lot's of members of this government has invested in vulture funds including that arsehole and actually building houses and fixing the housing problem will lose them money so they're more than happy to let people die on the streets outside the dail

CapersColly His friends I bet.

I'm curious as to what they see as 'Affordable' housing? With the prices of houses in this county I'd be lucky to have a deposit for a mortgage saved by the time I'm 50 with the ridiculous price of rent and other bills, saving is absolutely impossible. What will be done about it?

What a joke

Is there a specific panel of approved builders? If so, How many firms from other countries?

The only difference between this housing scheme and all the other failed ones is they've hyped this one up more, because they think they need the extra effort to fool the people.

Is rather the taliban than some of these useless bastards

Can someone ask the minister if he actually wants to see house prices, land prices and rents fall. I think it’s far from clear that he or govt actually do.

Not the best of interviews. Comes in with prepped script, doesn't ans questions. Should be confident to 'take on' O Broin, believe in his policy, this is now or never/make or break time for Housing policy in Ireland!

Can't say fairer than that!

Has anyone told him about the trades people shortage? Where is all these builders coming from?
