After months of pandemic isolation, Kris Hotchkiss expected a celebratory return to campus for his senior year at UC Santa Barbara. Instead, he and hundreds of fellow students have found themselves hammered by another crisis: a major housing crunch.
For the California Community Colleges system, only 12 of 116 campuses have housing programs, which shelter 2,400 students, ansaid. The campuses traditionally weren’t meant to offer residential life for commuter students. But the need is so high, with 20% of community college students reporting homelessness, that 81 colleges have submitted applications for new state housing grants to plan or construct dorm projects.
The $1.5-billion project would house more than 4,500 students, but 94% of the rooms would have no windows. “There were just so many different things that culminated in a perfect storm,” Unander said. “I’ve been working with the university legal center for 18 years and I’ve never seen a housing crisis like this one.”

Relax. Only about 27% of UCB undergraduates live in university housing. The rest either live at home or in off campus housing, and students have greater challenges in overcrowded classes than housing. Besides more than 50% will leave after the first exams anyway.
Fk. I’m about to live in a van and I’m well over a decade past my college year. Housing price is ridiculous and idgaf about the low mortgage when all I can get is a half million crapshack in the really bad part of Long Beach.
The university & city should work together to remedy this unacceptable situation.
