The plan calls for increased access to affordable housing for Indigenous peoples and support for revitalizing Indigenous languages.

The city of Toronto must make more tangible efforts to achieve the lofty promises of reconciliation with Indigenous communities that have been made over the years, according to a report released Wednesday morning.

The report sets out a 10-year plan for actions to be taken, including: increased access to affordable housing for Indigenous peoples, support for revitalizing Indigenous languages, enhanced Indigenous recruitment and retention within Toronto’s public service, and an apology for the city’s role in the militarized action against Métis people in the 1880s.

The report says that successive traumas, including colonization, land theft, forced assimilation, residential schools and systemic racism have created a population that has long experienced higher rates of poverty, violence and lack of proper housing. The report will be considered by the city’s executive committee on Wednesday.
