Former housing minister accused of ‘postcode snobbery’ after saying there is ‘no point’ putting disadvantaged families in ‘best street in Brighton’

Victorian Liberal MP Wendy Lovell has come under fire for saying children in social housing won’t fit in with others in wealthy areas if they can’t afford ‘the latest in sneakers and iPhones’.Victorian Liberal MP Wendy Lovell has come under fire for saying children in social housing won’t fit in with others in wealthy areas if they can’t afford ‘the latest in sneakers and iPhones’.Last modified on Thu 24 Mar 2022 01.

The former housing minister said the most vulnerable Victorians must be given access to long-term social housing, which is integrated with both public and private residents.“It only creates stigma if people can see that difference, so we need to make sure that [social housing] properties are not as identifiable as they have been in the past,” Lovell told the Legislative Council.

Lovell said social housing residents need to “actually fit into a neighbourhood” so that they can “have a good life”. “Well, bollocks to that, because your position on the socio-economic ladder should never determine your participation in this society under any circumstances. Shame on you for suggesting that it should.”

“As a former housing minister, she certainly tried to find the best intention. It hasn’t certainly been put that way. Social housing in my view should go where there are services available to people who need them.”Victorian Greens leader Samantha Ratnam described Lovell’s comments as offensive, saying they perpetuate misguided stereotypes about who lives in social housing.

Wow poor fella my country

What a boring old cow.

We should try to provide enough social housing so people who grow up in an area can stay there even if life is cruel to them. It is tougher on the underprivileged to have to leave the area they lived in when life does not shine on them.

Poor excuse for a human being.

The same LNP/IPA snobs who are always screaming “class warfare” when anyone dares to suggest capping gov subsidies to private school fees.

This is why private schools shouldn't exist and definitely shouldn't get any public money.

We don't have to play with the filthy unwashed, do we mummy?

But she is making a lot of sense. A housing commish family would struggle with day to day living expenses and suffer a social stigma if you slapped them in the middle of snooty upper class suburbs. Instead of the usual left wing hyperventilation, maybe read what she is saying.

Keep Brighton peasant free!

It is frequently done in regional areas.

The rich kids won’t have to go so far to buy their coke would they! What a piece of work typical liberal.

I like to think about all of those children who’ve grown up in social housing over many generations under various labour governments who will turf out liberal trash like Wendy Lovell at the very next opportunity. auspol

She couldn't mix with human beings

Lol. Chastised?! It’s Vic Liberals’ policy.

ElaineM11584892 I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want my children mixing with hers.

These Lib women take the cake, don't they? Do they have a nasty school or something that churns them out?

The banal face of modern Australian fascism...

I reckon we find Wendy’s address & turn it into a Shelter for the Homeless,Typical LNP Grub😡😡

Those that speak out are better than those that pretend yet deep down they are saying the same or worse. So leave sis Vic alone. We now know what she thinks.

This is a similar policy to desegregation busing in the USA. The final results showed it helped students academically and into adulthood and also had a positive effect for the next generation. At the time there was an outcry from typical small minded. How typical of LNP.

This is how the poor stay poor. She is speaking the shameful truth that is Australia under her party leadership

She said the quiet part out loud

Children can mix they don’t know any better it’s the parents that cause the problems. As much as people put down low social economic areas the thing I can say is the people are real. There’s good and bad in every area regardless of income.

Reminds me of a scene in a tv show set in 18th cent Paris: well-to-do ladies sitting chatting, one asks if others feel bad about the number of poor & homeless in the streets, 1 responds ‘yes, they should remove the poor to the less desirable parts of the city’ 😳.

What she is really saying is she sees no need to help those less fortunate, in any way.

Wendy Lovell next take:

GrogsGamut How can be a person who makes such a statement be a fit and proper person to sit in our parliament.

Tbh I wouldn’t really want to hang out with the snooty rich kids, but I ought to have the opportunity if I chose to. Mum probably wouldn’t let me because lots of them have criminals fraudsters and people we have seen on underbelly for parents. But I ought to be able to choose.

GrogsGamut WendyLovellMP clearly doesn’t want to run the risk of any of those people living in her street… and she has rationalised this to being for their own comfort and wellbeing… What a thoughtful person… AusPol2022 nastywomen

So improving outcomes for disadvantaged families is not an option?
