A technology developed by a Hudson native is changing the way people keep their loved one’s ashes and is available at funeral homes in Greater Cleveland.

Parting Stone, founded by a Hudson native, creates solidified remains that look like flat stones after loved ones are cremated.HUDSON, Ohio -

The company was started in 2019 and is now about 350 funeral homes in the U.S. and Canada. Parting Stone has worked with 3,000 families in the past two years, Crowe said.When he spoke to friends, he realized a lot of them were holding onto urns or ashes and kept them in closets, basements and garages. Ashes, he said, are messy and hard to keep while staying emotionally attached to it.

Crowe’s second grandfather, who was a big supporter of Crowe’s idea, would die a few years later. He knew he’d become stones, Crowe said, and some of his grandfather’s stones sit on his office desk. Others are with family members in other states. Crowe said the stones are then polished and cleaned. The average person becomes about 65 to 80 stones. The process costs $695, and people interestedBusch Funeral Homes offers the service and was part of Parting Stone’s initial rollout, owner Jim Busch said. He said Crowe brought the concept to him while it was still in development.

Busch said each set of stones, like each person, comes back unique with slightly different colored stones. He said families tend to split them up between family members or spread them in separate locations.
