Melbourne faces a fresh rental housing crisis as tenants find properties have dried up in some areas of the city noeltowell | ausecon property

Bartender, wedding singer and part-time student Alexander Rohan is struggling to find rental accommodation. In the outer suburbs, where renters are more likely to be families with children, the shortage is more acute, with just 0.4 per cent of rental properties available for lease in the Cardinia council area in Melbourne’s outer south-east and in Sunbury in the city’s far north-west.

The most dramatic change to Melbourne’s rental landscape was in the city centre, where rental vacancies were at just 1.5 per cent in March, down from more than 11 per cent a year before.
