Domain data shows just nine auctions were held in Melbourne over the 2019 Easter long weekend, compared to 48 in 2020 and 50 in 2021.

“The stickiness of online auctions and the hybrid model has definitely continued in 2022,” Powell said. “They were really non-existent before the pandemic and, what it shows is if a buyer is a serious buyer, they will make sure they’re at the auction in-person or online despite the holiday.” Fewer auctions held on a long weekend also meant those that were being sold under the hammer would get more attention from serious buyers.

The 68-year-old, who still works as a psychologist, wants to downsize from the home she has owned for 35 years and where she raised her four children. “The next weekend available would have been late May, but that would have been too late with the way the garden looks right now and the weather turning colder.”
