eir says its gigabit fibre network is now available to more than 800,000 homes and businesses across Ireland

The company is investing €500m into Ireland's Fibre to the Home network and says that by 2026 it will have delivered access to gigabit broadband to 84% of premises in Ireland.

"We are building a future-proofed network capable of delivering speeds of 2Gbps straight to the customer’s home, across all cities, every town and almost every village in the country," said Eavann Murphy, Managing Director of Open eir Wholesale. Earlier this month, National Broadband Ireland, which is rolling out a new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government's National Broadband Plan, gave a progress report.David McCourt, Chairman of National Broadband Ireland, said the leading indicators gave the company confidence the project can and will be delivered on time and on budget.

NBI said that by the end of the year a total of 221,000 premises - or 40% of planned area - will be under construction, up from 28% last year.
