As a child growing up in Providence, Rhode Island, in the 1950s and 1960s, huge swaths of his neighborhood of Lippitt Hill, a center of Black life at the foot of the stately homes of the city’s elite East Side, were taken by eminent domain for redevelopment projects. They’re looking to atone, at least initially, for what happened during urban renewal efforts of the late 20th century, a period that saw Black and Native American communities such as Lippitt Hill razed to make way for new residential and business developments that paved the way for the city’s modern economy, anchored around its universities and hospitals.
but reparation for who? those with matching pigment 200 years later? are we not creating new harm by punishing those today not involved with past slavery?
A fascinating part that I don’t see discussed. Apart from the inhumanity & racism that is clearly in this, the long term econ impact to all is severely negative. A thriving econ benefits all, thru better health, more general spending, education that lifts all.
The continued hue and cry after the fact for need to be compensated for progress. Do former, any still living? horse and buggy owners asking for compensation?
Rhode Island had the foresight to tell the British crown to go fuck itself two months before all the other colonies followed suit. 246 yrs later RI is once again setting the stage to right another wrong.
I have no doubt that these reparations will be re-invested into the local community by these fine individuals who will be receiving them.
