Ontario's New Democrats and Progressive Conservatives are both promising to build 1.5 million homes in 10 years as the province grapples with a dearth of supply and ballooning prices.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath touted her housing plan today - first released in November 2020, it has since been updated to include home equity loans to help first-time buyers with a down payment.

On supply, the New Democrats say the 1.5 million homes would be a mix of starter homes, purpose-built rentals and affordable housing units, achieved in part by ending exclusionary zoning. Changing municipal zoning rules to allow more types of housing to be built aside from single-family homes was a key recommendation from a housing affordability task force report that was commissioned by the Progressive Conservative government.

The Tories pledged to use the report as the basis for their long-term housing strategy, but legislation earlier this year failed to include that measure and several other key recommendations - something the municipal affairs and housing minister blamed on a lack of municipal co-operation. The Liberals have not yet released their housing plan, but Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca criticized the Tory plan for a lack of help for renters and first-time home buyers.PC Party Leader Doug Ford and Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath are seen in this combination photo.

Not sure why you would expect the taxpayer to pay to build other people's homes? Taking money from those who earned it, and giving it to someone who didn't, is THEFT!

I’m telling you AndreaHorwath, I want to vote for you. You are doing things that make sense in areas I care about. BUT, you and your party are the most likely to lock us down again when another covid scare comes along. I cannot afford that.

Get rid of the red tape to build new homes

There’s really only one measure. Build them. What they are talking about is the financing. The building is the easy part

Municipal reform is needed. Disband undemocratic bodies like YorkRegionGovt

don't have to settle for these 2 options. Ontario Greens have a plan too: *Let's build 15 minute neighbourhoods: Where it’s easy to connect with friends and family. Where we can get to the places we need to go without a long commute*

With what trades people? Also, if they are building 250K affordable units why would draconian Rent Controls need to be applied to existing/new rental housing? That’s not a very high number of homes…..

Ontario NDP promise to spur construction of 1.5 million new homes in 10 yearsOntario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says her housing plan aims to make it more affordable for families to have their own home, not speculators wanting to make a fortune Goodbye greenbelt 😞 There's a hoarding problem, not a housing shortage. Why is Trudeau bringing in more than a MILLION people a year between immigration and foreign students - forcing Canadians to compete with newcomers for doctors, housing, schooling, and healthcare? It's a crooked ponzi scheme. 1.5 million new homes are not much use if Canadians can not afford them.
