‘Homes aren’t safe’: Western Sydney prepares evacuation shelters for hot summers | smh_andrew

Councils in western Sydney are planning to set up heat refuges for residents forced out of their homes by extreme heat, as part of a plan to prepare for dangerously hot summers.

Western Sydney suburbs such as Edmondson Park can be up to 10 degrees hotter than Sydney’s coastline.WSROC president Barry Calvert said heatwaves kill more Australians than other natural disasters. New planning rules to reduce the impacts of urban heat and a rating system to assess developments for heat resilience have also been developed as part of WSROC’sCalvert said western Sydney residents were already forced to change their lives because of extreme heat, which “combined with a wide-scale power outages could result in hundreds of deaths across Sydney”.The region had 37 days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees in 2020, he said.

Sweltering Cities founder Emma Bacon said heat refuge shelters were an important safety measure for people living in hot homes as temperatures rise.

_andrew So does that mean power outages... 'wellness camps' getting used... Sydney is after all a Rothschild resilient city.... is the weather going to be so engineered, like India's recent heatwave?

_andrew I don’t know who sets the trends for home exteriors but maybe they could do us a solid and pick lighter colours for the next wave? Really tired of seeing black houses with dark roofs pop up in every corner, it’s madness.

_andrew summer? still in autumn and winter first

_andrew Runs pro corruption LNP protection messages all day then comes to advertising its body off work as “Challenge your thinking with unbiased reporting and diverse perspectives from the Herald.” What a funny joke , you would almost call it pure corruption

_andrew The logical conclusion from knowing about heatwaves is: (1) paint all roofs white (2) do not grow Western Sydney WSROC_Australia SwelteringCity (3) Stop building the 2nd airport as a new source of heat. (4) Forget about the Aerotropolis and the metro NSWDPE LucyTurnbull_AO

_andrew Would be unnecessary if 1. Climate change was addressed. And 2,housing development wasnt rampant environmental destruction...

_andrew Thermal mass, double glazing, terrace design, internal doors to airlock draughts and prevent air exchange, vented roofs. Not rocket surgery.

_andrew Buy a air-conditioned unit , cannot afford one, work harder , and save If on the dole, get a job

_andrew This is so basic, yet it's 2022, and the State of NSW still hasn't mandated that: - developers should leave trees in place wherever possible, and plant new ones - roofs should be painted white Q: Are we serious about this or not?

_andrew F me gently!

_andrew 1. Stop building houses so close together 2. Plant a heap of trees 3. Stop using dark roofs FGS this isn’t hard.

_andrew Totally normal country with sensible housing policies 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
