Emergency services should be merged and residents at risk of inundation moved, a northern NSW mayor has told an inquiry examining the state's flood response.
Ms Cherry said the region is at great risk from climate change and has a higher proportion of vulnerable and low socio-economic residents."The single thing that is going to mean that we're not back here in the future doing exactly the same thing is getting people out of the floodplain," she said.Councils can access state funds for voluntary property buybacks and house raising through the NSW floodplain management program.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said on Wednesday governments needed to learn from disasters and be prepared for them to happen again. Tuesday's hearing in Lismore heard criticism of Resilience NSW, the state agency responsible for preparing for and leading the response to natural disasters. Tweed MP Geoff Provest said on Wednesday he had been critical of Resilience NSW but still had faith in the agency.
Ms Cherry said the agency had begun doorknocking in the region to ensure residents know what help is available.
