A lack of skilled workers threatens to derail the country\u0027s effort to tackle its housing affordability crisis. Find out more here

“We can’t build any more than we built in the last few years,” Michael Cooper, president of Dream Unlimited Corp., a Toronto-based real estate company, said of Canada’s housing industry. “If you want to have more units, we need more people to build.”

The country’s housing crisis, caused by a shortage of affordable units and soaring prices, has been a key focus for politicians.

will take the most time to fix and whoever wins in Ontario’s election should make expanding skilled-trade education a priority, he said.Article content “They should get together with developers and other people and really focus on how do you promote young people going into trades,” he said at an interview at Bloomberg News’s office in Toronto. “The average person working the trades will make over $100,000 a year. That average — it’s a pretty good job — but it’s not something that everybody in our community thinks about as a career choice. And I think we’ve got to change that.

To ease the affordability challenge in the meantime, Cooper said the government could consider lowering taxes on newly built units, noting that items such as sales and land transfer taxes, development fees and permits can account for 38 per cent of the purchase price. Lost revenue from those cuts could be made up with property tax increases, shifting more of the financial burden from people trying to buy property to those who already own it, he said.

But regressives oppose immigration. Where are the workers going to come from?

The Key Element should materials prices. The price of Lumber has quadrupled since 2019 meaning, for those of you who can’t understand, the material cost is over 4x what it was. I wanted to build a garage and was quoted $14,000 for a materials package, now it’s over $56,000.

And is that Trudeau’s problem. He can’t manufacture worker’s.

The cost of building has doubled in a year so not exactly a fix.

No, the shortage is in willing trades that will work for Sub Par wages. Where in the past generations the Unions were the driving force of Apprentice training in trades, now with the Unions being less of an effect, as they have been marginalised.

Ontario’s politicians all tout the same fix for the housing crisis: supply, supply, supply. But experts say it’s not that simpleOntario’s politicians all tout the same fix for the housing crisis: supply, supply, supply. But experts say it’s not that simple. Boosting Ontario’s housing supply won’t necessarily bring down prices and make homes more affordable. Sprawl is very expensive. Those initial costs go on developers who increase home prices. Sprawling highways will just drive up costs. Make municipalities build infrastructure and limit development charges. and the labour required to do it is just not there, especially if this is supply is to be made through detached housing. These houses are nothing more than plywood boxes!!! Not worth $$$$$ millions that people are paying due to high demand. Mortgage rates have gone up. That is slowing down sales. Way overpriced!!!
