Canada: The land where any plan to build more housing risks being studied to death

What’s standing in their way? Zoning.

The sad thing about this article is that it's too optimistic. The Vancouver Plan is not a zoning reform, it's a plan to make future plans that might one day reform zoning.

They've had decades. It's time to admit failure. Municipal governments are fundamentally dysfunctional institutions that have created this gradually worsening crisis. It extends beyond Canada -- desirable countries where cities control zoning are all in crisis.

People have learned that they don't have to accept plans cooked up between politicians, developers, landowners, and City Hall staff wanting gold stars on their resumes. Fight back, and build better neighbourhoods that will make room for increased density. Gentle densification!

There's another option: they can grow elsewhere. Build up Windsor, Cornwall etc - they are begging for more people, industry & infrastructure. They are fine places in their own right. 100 years ago Canada's economy was better distributed across the country. Fix that !!!

acoyne Cities have been stripped of funding all over the country. They can no longer support sprawl. New neighbourhoods are massive drains on cities like Calgary where the building lobby has bought every politician and still they are saying no more.

Maybe because, or does Ford or anyone care
