Rough sleeping on the rise: Why Dave chose to return to the streets | niltiac

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, Dave* was sleeping in the sandstone cave at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. The hotel program was part of a

The annual statewide rough sleeping street count in February found 1207 people sleeping outdoors, the most visible form of homelessness. This was a fall overall, but there were regional rises including on the South Coast, Mid North Coast and Coffs Harbour. The City of Sydney found 225 people sleeping rough within the CBD and surrounds in February, compared with 275 the previous year.

Jo Mills, practice lead for youth and homelessness at Uniting, said she expected the numbers of rough sleepers would soon be as high, “if not higher”, than before the pandemic because service providers were seeing a new type of client. In some cases it has been involuntary. Kai, 39, was housed in a “beautiful” studio apartment in Dee Why through Together Home, for several months in 2020.

“I thought it best to come to a place where there’s food, there’s generous people, there’s resilient people, there’s very much a community down here,” he said.Meanwhile, Dave was committed to a mental hospital after returning to the streets. He was told he has schizophrenia - a diagnosis he disputes - and released to stay in a hostel in Surry Hills.

niltiac i hope y’all have trouble sleeping at night for the homophobic disgusting things you’ve done during PRIDE MONTH

niltiac y’all forced rebel to out herself, you disgust me

niltiac So niltiac do you agree with the herald threatening to out an LGBT person ?

niltiac You suck as not only a paper, but as people as a whole. I'd tell you to do better, but I don't think that's possible for people of your ethical caliber.

niltiac You really ought to address the only issue anybody is talking about right now in regards to anything you publish. Why do you think it's OK to threaten to out somebody? Where do you get the nerve to complain when your attempted blackmail victim scooped you?

Shame on you trying to out someone without their permission

niltiac you need to apologize to rebel Wilson right now!

niltiac Oh now they’ve locked their tweets. Don’t care for the backlash, eh?

niltiac Ahh, it’s The Sydney Morning Assholes

niltiac what a scummy newspaper.

niltiac Whoever thought it would a good idea to out someone in a newspaper should be left without water in the outback

niltiac what if we outed your street address?

niltiac You can't run from your readers forever. Why do you think it's acceptable to blackmail and out anyone?

niltiac So is your strategy right now to just…tweet out a headline ever 20 minutes, in the hope that it will erase the fact that you blackmailed someone into coming out against their will? And then tried to drag them for it Judging by the replies on these tweets, it’s going great.

Wow, outting people. I hope your company fails. Like its satisfying to see that your prestige as new report is going down the shit hole. At least come out with a statement about it.

niltiac Shutup idiots who threaten to out people

niltiac Did you think people would side with you when you threatened to out somebody? Jesus.
