No jobs, no trees: The suburbs where urban sprawl is hurting Sydney | smh_andrew

Sydney’s urban sprawl is growing as developers turn green space into suburbia, amid concerns about the environmental, health and economic costs of the city’s expanding footprint.

“They have to live somewhere, and I guess it is safe to say that the majority of these new arrivals in western Sydney live in urban sprawl-type suburbs,” he said. “We also need to ensure that all future development is resilient in the face of climate change,” he said. “That means restoring biodiversity and avoiding flood plains and other environmental hazards.”

Gangemi said the suburbs were beginning their transformation into established suburbs “and this can take up to 25 years to complete”. “I think there are good pockets, but I have not come across a suburb in western Sydney that was built in the past 10 years where heat-responsive design was implemented,” he said.
