Across Cape Town, tents and makeshift homes are increasingly competing for the little open space left near the hustle and bustle of opportunities, writesFifteen years ago, 18 July 2007, at the launch of The Elders, former President Nelson Mandela said these words about kindness:I believe that in the end, that it is kindness and accommodation that are all the catalysts for real change"If we want to honour Madiba's values, leadership and contribution, as we should, we must demonstrate...

That the most active department in the City in its interface with homelessness has been Safety & Security is revealing. It reveals that homelessness is regarded more as a threat to safety than a housing and social justice issue. It's encouraging to see the apparent change in attitude recently expressed by the Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, with a commitment to shift from the City's law enforcement approach to one of care and compassion.

But, while South Africa has real reason to boast about the number of fully subsidised homes it has built and given away free to qualifying citizens, there is still a mountain to climb – approximately 12 million South Africans still need homes. Furthermore, to deal effectively with the phenomenon of homelessness, one might expect the starting point to be knowing how many people actually live on the streets. brettherron The solution is simple, build housing in Atlantis (because it's cheap and they don't have people to bother for change for alcohol and drugs) with workshops and drug & alcohol facility to help with the substance abuse.

brettherron It's also funny that during the fifa WC all these people were shifted out of the city because they were an eyesore, but now it's ok to be hounded by people bothering you for change so they can go buy drugs and alcohol, fuck that.

brettherron Large parts of the city smell of piss and shit Brett but that's ok, drug use is all over the city, car break-ins a norm, theft and damage to city property happens on a daily basis, just today I stopped some tik head from stealing a drain cover.

brettherron Viva ANC

brettherron Just hush about the independence ideal. They heard of it and are following the white people, just like the rest of Africa.

brettherron Why should land belong to the State. It should belong to the people

brettherron Instead of selling municipal land it should be provided yo the people

brettherron Local Government has failed to execute the people housing process project as per the Housing Act.......

brettherron 🤬LOOKS GOOD FOR TOURISM HUH!

brettherron The more you spend to help them, the more will arrive. Ask Europe.

brettherron Like Centurion

brettherron Brett, what do you suggest? The ANC has destroyed the economy. Now what? Let us hear your suggestions!

brettherron It wouldn’t be so bad if the people occupying the land did not litter so much. Littering seems to be something certain South Africans excel at.

brettherron Copying Lagos and Luanda.

brettherron Wonder if we can expect a response from CityofCT or geordinhl ?

brettherron brettherron continues 2 place responsibility on CityofCT 2 do the work his buddies running the country aren't doing. With the leader of ForGoodZA living off a MYANC appointment one would think the pressure should b applied at the top.Poverty is a reality of a badly run country

brettherron Too many Eastern Cape refugees.

brettherron Where do all these people come from?

brettherron Your Mayor said foreigners are welcome in Cape Town. Please take good care of them. 🤣

brettherron But if CityofCT do anything about it you will be the first to moan
