Some tenants of rural homes are facing huge rent hikes as rent pressure zone rules don’t apply to certain country communities and a lack of data means they cannot meet the necessary criteria.

Last May, when Aleksandra Dabrowska, Mary Loftus and Anna Gallagher were told by their landlord about an impending 75 per cent rent hike – or €600 each, in real terms – they decided to pool resources to lodge a complaint.

The three neighbours of Cnoc na Sí estate in Tubbercurry, Co Sligo, each paid between €800 and €880 per month to rent their homes.
