More than 20 per cent of houses in the Shoalhaven are empty while the victims of the housing crisis spend winter in tents, but the success of an appeal to investment property owners in a neighbouring shire could help to get roofs over heads.

A New South Wales mayor will ask holiday rental house owners to consider leasing to permanent tenants in a bid to address the housing crisis.Some 600 homes are available for short stays in the major regional hub of NowraShoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley's move follows the success of the samein the neighbouring Eurobodalla Shire, where 50 home owners have agreed to switch to long-term leasing.

Ms Findley said domestic tourism had slowed down in the region because people were choosing to holiday overseas again."We've had a quiet winter in the Shoalhaven and full-time tenancy is a good option for people who own a second home, particularly as we see international flights picking up speed again," Ms Findley said.

"We're not in the same kind of economic conditions as we were 18 months ago when it comes to domestic travel. "Some people may find themselves with an asset that isn't what they expected, in terms of running a business from home." Amanda Findley says she will write to investment property owners and ask them to reconsider their approach to leasing.

ShoalhavenCC FFS - AirBnB is something the councils SHOULD BE regulating, thats their basic job above all else. Tax the ever loving sh1t out of them, then use that money to invest in public housing. Tourists can go back to using hotels - this is not that F**KING HARD.

MOST empty houses are abandoned when the occupants go to nursing homes without giving power of attorney to anyone. Or die and the relatives couldn't care less. My town... 4600 dwellings. 5 Short term rentals. 0 holiday houses. 500 vacant houses. Most now uninhabitable.
